Maximising boll retention in Bollgard-II hybrids

Discover proven agronomic practices to improve boll retention and achieve healthier cotton crops — from the Navkar Research Team’s field notes across Gujarat, Maharashtra and Telangana. The difference between a modest cotton season and an outstanding one rarely comes from the seed alone. It comes from the hundred small decisions a farmer makes between sowing and boll opening — and how many of those bolls the plant is allowed to keep.

The window that decides the year.

Bollgard-II hybrids carry the genetics for high yield, but the plant still negotiates every boll it retains against stress, competition and nutrition. The days between square formation and peak flowering — roughly week six to week eleven — are where a season is quietly made or lost. Farmers who consistently outperform their district average share a simple habit: they walk the field twice a week during this window with the same three questions in mind — is the plant hungry, thirsty, or under attack?

A boll saved is a season won.
  • A late nitrogen push produces beautiful canopy and disappointing yield. Once flowering begins, tilt the schedule toward potassium and boron. Boron in particular is inexpensive, often overlooked, and directly linked to how many young bolls survive their first ten days.
  • Moderate water stress before flowering encourages a compact, fruiting canopy. But a single missed irrigation during peak flowering is enough to trigger the plant's self-defence — and it will shed the bolls it cannot support. Aim for a steady soil moisture of 60–70% field capacity through the fruiting window, then taper deliberately as bolls mature.
  • Turn over a leaf from the third node of five random plants. If you count more than five whiteflies, or find pink bollworm damage on any dropped square, act within 48 hours. Bollgard-II reduces the pressure — it does not eliminate the need to look.
